Thousands Throng Joyful LIMA 2007

LANGKAWI, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- Thousands of local and foreign visitors thronged the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2007 exhibition which was opened to the public today.

It is estimated that there were about 50,000 visitors at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) which is the venue for the aerospace component of LIMA 2007, and at the Awana Porto Malai for the maritime segment which displays 71 ships.

The smooth traffic flow since the event began on Tuesday turned heavy as there were many whole families among the visitors today, some coming as early as 9am, encouraged by the fine weather.

This year's LIMA provides a platform for 450 defence companies from 20 countries to feature their expertise and technologies in the maritime and aerospace industries, with the eager crowds seeking information, trying out the defence assets or simply posing for photographs with the sophisticated equipment.

Among the attention grabbers are the Radpanzer Condor armoured vehicle, Adnan 25MM assault vehicle, Augusta AW109LOH/LUH helicopter of the Malaysian army's 881 Squadron, ANZA MK II bazooka, three Rapid Intervention Motorcycles from the Fire and Rescue Department, and EC-135 helicopter belonging to the Malaysian police.

A visitor from Medan, Indonesia, Trayfin Iskandar, said he was impressed with LIMA 2007 which displayed the latest aircraft such as those by Augusta and Eurocopter.

"I have been to Langkawi before but this time it's for LIMA," said Trayfin who was accompanied by his wife.

D. Thanaselvam from Kuala Lumpur said the exhibition provided him with a lot of information on the maritime and aerospace industries.

Che Zan Said from Kg Ulu Melaka revealed that she went to LIMA hoping to meet Malaysian astronaut Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, who is undoubtedly a star attraction at the MIEC since Monday.

"We've never failed to come to LIMA. But this time we have brought our children along as we want to take pictures with Dr Sheikh Muszaphar. We have been closely following his space mission," she added when met at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation booth.

Outside the MIEC, the static exhibition featuring 80 fighter jets, transport planes and helicopters also enthralled the crowd.

But the aerobatic show put up by the RMAF pilots in the Sukhoi SU-30MKM, MIG-29N and Hornet F-18, the British Red Arrows in their Hawks, and the Indian Air Force's "Suryakiran" team added to the joy and thrills at LIMA with their captivating formations.

Tomorrow is the last day of LIMA 2007.
